Following on from the dark and brooding screen print series, YNHXRC, which exhibited in October of 2016, artist-photographer Rebecca Cleal is kick-starting 2017 with a brand new series of editions, simply entitled Water.
The Water Series will be an ongoing and evolving exploration of a theme that pervades Rebecca’s photographic work, and will plot a geographical exploration of this one vital element, underscoring as it progresses the importance of this theme in the artist's working practice.
The sea and the river valleys of West Wales made a deep impression on Rebecca’s childhood, and left a lasting fascination with the presence and flow of water, that manifests itself repeatedly in the photographic documenting she makes of her living environment.
The first edition of this series, English Channel, was shot whilst journeying from the UK to France in the late summer of 2016, only a few months after the UK voted to leave the European Union. What this narrow channel of water may represent in the near future is not yet clear, but what is absolutely uncertain is how readily and freely we will be able to cross it.
Using screen print techniques developed over the past three years in the artist's studio — techniques which were finessed for the YNHXRC series of prints — this edition has been produced using varnish and 8 layers of black ink. The finish is deep and rich and layered, and quite unlike any other photographic reproduction.
English Channel is printed on 315gsm Heritage White acid-free & archival paper, at 50cm x 70cm, and in a limited edition of 25. Each print has been blind-embossed, stamped, and signed by the artist.
This is an opportunity to secure one of the first editions of the series, and watch this space for subsequent releases throughout 2017.
